Improvements to the 2023 Honda Civic Type R

The first-generation Honda Civic Type R left a rather favorable mark on everyone's heart. With a new batch of Civic now on the road, it's with anticipation that we await what's next for the Type R model.

The good news is that the car has been introduced and we know it will be coming to us later this year in a revised and improved form.

Let's see what has been tweaked and enhanced with the model for its second real run.

The powertrain

The new Type R will benefit from the same 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine of the departing generation, but some improvements have been made to it. The turbo, intake manifold and exhaust system have all been redesigned. The result is 9 more horsepower for 315 and 15 more lb-ft of torque for 310.

That's promising.

Handling

Of course, you'll have to test drive the new Type R to confirm that it's going to be even more incisive than the current one, but if you take a look at the chassis changes, you can be sure of it.

First, the 2023 Civic Type R will take advantage of the Civic's new platform, a more torsionally rigid structure. That's a first advantage. Second, the front and rear tracks have been widened by 1.0 and 0.75 inches, respectively. Add to that a 1.4-inch wheelbase increase, and all of this can only translate into greater stability in all conditions.

Cooling

Honda is well aware that many Civic Type R owners will want to test their car's capabilities on the track. That's why, when the model was redesigned, emphasis was placed on cooling, both the engine and the braking system. For the brakes, we wanted units that could perform longer at full capacity.

As for the powertrain, we simply worked to make the engine breathe better. We did that by widening the grille, but also by installing a larger radiator, as well as a larger fan inside the engine compartment.

Really, this is an even more compelling Civic Type R coming our way. Be sure not to miss it.
